When the chemistry is right
91ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’ science labs buzzed with about 60 busily titrating chemists last weekend – when the school was one of the venues for NSW Inter-Schools Schools Titration Competition. Our chemists Sarah, Sophie and Natalie were so accurate they won first place among the schools competing at 91ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ - congratulations. Bethlehem College (Ashfield) came second, with St Mary’s Cathedral College in third place.
In 90 minutes, teams of three must complete a set of acid-base titrations to determine an unknown concentration of a weak acid. The students used a standard acid to analyse the concentration of a sodium hydroxide solution, which they then used to analyse the concentration of three acetic acid solutions. To make things even trickier, each member of the team must be individually accurate to win.
Run by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, the competition is open to all Year 11 and 12 chemistry students. Our chemists’ fantastic win opens the way for an invitation to the national competition in September. For more information,
