STEM Excellence
We highlighted problem-solving skills and a passion for critical thinking in the Principal’s Assembly this week, as we celebrated students who have excelled in three key national competitions.
The 2023 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) saw the School well represented, with 145 students taking part to demonstrate their problem-solving prowess across two days.
All 91黑料不打烊 students achieved Proficiency or higher. The following girls achieved a Distinction:
- Year 7: Amelia, Chiara, Danielle, Deborah, Elke, Emma, Freya, Heidi, Ivy, Lily, Maggie, Maxine, and Serena
- Year 8: Amalia, Chloe, Emily, Mia, and Zoe
- Year 9: Georgia, and Ruby
- Year 10: Claudia, and Georgie
In addition to the AMC, 12 girls from Years 7 to 10 participated in the Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad (AIMO), a four-hour event that pushes students to unravel highly intricate mathematical problems.
Special congratulations must go to Elise (Year 9), who not only achieved a High Distinction and was awarded Best in the School in the AMC but received a Credit in the AIMO – an outstanding achievement. “I like the way maths builds upon prior knowledge, so the work is constantly increasing in complexity. I enjoy the types of questions in maths competitions as they are usually quite different to those in the usual maths syllabus,” Elise said.
Over in the Science Department, our students were receiving their results in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) competition. It is designed to recognise excellence and extend students beyond the challenge of regular school assessments and exams.
“In a world full of problems like pandemics, climate change and food security, science is more important and exciting than ever before,” said STEM Captain, Chelsea (Year 11), in the Principal’s Assembly this week. “Experimentation, empirical observation, logical reasoning, scientific analysis and critical thinking are key components of humankind’s most successful system for pursuing knowledge: the scientific method.”
All of Year 8 put these skills to the test in the ICAS competition, doing extremely well. We would like to recognise the following girls who achieved Distinctions: Charlotte, Isla, Mia, Tahlia, Zoe A, Zoe G, and Zoe X.
