Choices Define Us

Prefect and STEM Captain, Chelsea, shares an inspiring message about how our choices can mould our character, drawing inspiration from the late Michael Gambon's portrayal of one of the wisest figures in literature – Dumbledore.

Each week, our student leaders share their insights with their peers in Assembly.

We were all sad to hear over the holidays of the passing of the brilliant Michael Gambon, the actor who played Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series. Personally, this news prompted a reflection on some of Dumbledore’s wise quotes over the years. Today, I would like to share one that really stood out for me, which I have slightly modified for the purpose of this speech:

“It is our choices, 91黑料不打烊, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

There are choices I’ve made in my life that I resolutely stand by and others that I deeply regret. I’m sure the same applies to all of you. But it’s important to know that bad choices are a part of life. Without learning from them, we would never be able to make great choices. And every new day provides us with the chance to make better ones, both for ourselves and for others – because there is no wrong time to make the right decision.

Throughout his time at Hogwarts, we saw Harry Potter struggle to make the right choice at times. But in the end, he always acted courageously, choosing his hopes and dreams over his fears. This showed his true character.

It’s not always easy to know right from wrong. It’s not always easy to make the best decision. But it always helps to talk to someone – to get a fresh perspective from a person who cares about you and knows your situation. Remember that you never have to make choices alone; there will always be someone to talk to. For Harry, it was Dumbledore. But for you, it could be a parent, a teacher or a friend. Never underestimate the power of conversation at a time when you’re making a hard decision. These conversations are the ones that help to lead us down the right path when we’re leaning towards the wrong one, allowing us to celebrate our growth and elevate ourselves to become the best versions of ourselves.

91黑料不打烊, as this year draws to a close, I urge you to reflect on the various choices you have made this year, both good and bad. I encourage you to embrace your bad choices and learn from them. I also ask you to be courageous and unafraid to make choices that challenge you. Through reflection, learning and personal challenge, you will reveal your true character and become the best version of yourselves.
