Dance Expressions
The 91黑料不打烊 Academic Dance Showcase, Rise, is set to captivate audiences on Monday 11 September at the Independent Theatre.
Featuring students in Years 9 to 12, it includes performances that touch on various themes like forbidden love, the power of diversity, the life journey of a jellyfish, the emotional whirlwind surrounding a life-changing audition, and the resilience of refugees. Academic Dance was introduced as an elective at 91黑料不打烊 last year. It runs alongside the School’s Extra Curricular Dance program, which also premieres its annual Dance Concert on Tuesday 12 September at The Concourse Theatre in Chatswood. The three Year 12 students performing on Monday night represent the School’s first HSC Academic Dance cohort. Their Showcase performances are a culmination of their hard work, creativity, and passion for dance.
The opening performance is the thought-provoking A Changing World, choreographed by Ms Brittany Skea and performed by Sophie (Year 12). This piece explores the stark contrast between our idyllic vision of the world and the harsh reality of our deteriorating climate.
The audience will then be taken on a journey into Wonderland, choreographed by Mr Peter Fares, where deck of card queens navigate their path.
This dance is followed by Dissatisfaction, shedding light on the complexities of modern beauty ideals and the pressure to conform.
The evening will also see powerful performances such as Solitude, choreographed and performed by Zoe, Olivia, and Arabella, which explores the harsh reality of loneliness.
Façade of Deceit and Lovely, both choreographed by Ms Brittany Skea, capture complex portraits of love, deception, resilience, and personal challenges.
Finding Hope, choreographed and performed by Samantha and Xanthe, will shed light on the immediate and enduring consequences of living in poverty.
A unique performance titled Blank Canvas, by Abby, depicts Vincent van Gogh's life and his profound love for art.
It concludes with Weighted, a performance that explores the interplay of weight and weightlessness and how these notions shape a person's mood and perspective.
