2023 Harmony Day – coming together; rejoicing in difference.
The 91黑料不打烊 Global Diversity Club celebrates Harmony Day throughout campus each year, acknowledging the cultures, religions, and identities represented in the 91黑料不打烊 community and promoting a sentiment that everyone belongs.
The national event dates back to 1999, following Australia’s commitment to the Refugee Convention, and has become a way to recognise the value of the myriad cultures that form our society.
Global Diversity Club members, including leaders Jemima, Mily and Ellie, gathered to sell orange ribbons at the Walker Street gate before school, and cakes and biscuits at recess. Their efforts were to raise money for the Asylum Seekers Centre, which provides practical help for people seeking asylum in New South Wales and advocates for fair and humane refugee policies.
The Club also aired a video in Senior School Assembly, featuring interviews with students and staff about their personal beliefs around harmony.
"To me, harmony is the joining of lots of different groups of varying people from different races, socio economic backgrounds, genders and sexualities – everything – that come together and while they may not always agree, they are able to come together respectfully and acknowledge their different struggles and achievements," said Prefect Charlotte (Year 12).
In the Junior School, our youngest students have been busy this week, colouring and cutting out "harmony balloons" during recess and lunch. This activity is a symbol of commitment to fostering a harmonious environment and accentuating the importance of coming together and working as one.
