Learning vital skills for a host of careers.

The bustling spirit of commerce was alive and well at Year 10 Market Day this week, with students showcasing their entrepreneurial flair and spicing up our lunch break with a smorgasbord of culinary treats for sale.

The event was the practical component of the topic Running a Business and tested the students' ability to question, gather and process information, analyse and process options and arguments and come to evidence-based conclusions. Collaborating in teams they assumed roles including senior management, operations, accounting, and marketing, to conceive, produce, and promote their wares with an impressive level of skill and acumen.

Additional complexities included incorporating School regulations, sourcing equity finance, and ensuring a COVID-19-safe operational approach. "It has been great to put into practice what we have been learning through text books and theory", said Amelie. “I have found it eye-opening to discover how much the costs add up and how they impact your bottom line at the end."

After copious campus-wide promotion, Tuesday's midday rain could not deter students and staff, who inundated the stalls, to feast on a range of goods that targeted the hungry school lunch crowd.

"It has been a really fun practical assessment and great to do in groups," said Georgia.

"I think it is a really good program overall, and the opportunity to make money is a great incentive for our success as stallholders and our overall motivation to learn and do well," said Bella. "Whether or not we pursue a business career, these are really important general life skills.”
