Blog: Extraordinary Leadership

On Tuesday, our Senior School Student Leadership team for 2020/2021, Georgia, Charlie and Maddy gave their final speech at Senior School Assembly as the new Student Leadership Team for 2021/2022 was announced.

Wow. What a term it has been. This Assembly may be bittersweet, but I promise I won't get too emotional...To think this is the last ever end of term speech we will give is strange, but we are so incredibly excited to pass on the roles to the next set of captains. But don’t get too excited… we may be handing over our roles, but you can’t get rid of us that quickly! We just wanted to say a massive thank you to each and every one of you here today. Despite a few bumps in the road, from improvised Assembly speeches to still being a little intimidated by Upper School... thank you for allowing us to lead you all, and for doing so with open arms.

The past term, and year, has taught us the importance of valuing everyday interactions with friends, family, and teachers, as well as continuing to support and be kind to one another. Undoubtedly, COVID-19 has impacted us significantly, and we want to congratulate you all on how well you’ve tackled such challenging and unknown situations. As a School, we’ve demonstrated our ability to quickly bounce back from such situations, with events bringing us all together again such as bake sales, dance parties, sumo wrestling, House meetings and even things as simple as having whole School Assemblies. So, thank you all for putting in the effort, supporting one and another, and allowing us to have the best year possible.

‘Make the Ordinary Extraordinary’ has been our main focus as a Captain body. We have heard from a range of girls in Assembly this year about how they choose to make the ordinary extraordinary. Each story showed us that being extraordinary doesn’t mean changing the world, it means recognising ways that we can turn ordinary parts of our lives into extraordinary moments. Some days, your extraordinary may be winning player of the match, and on other days, coming to school may be extraordinary. Thank you all for making 91黑料不打烊 an extraordinary environment where we have all been able to connect and have fun. Without you we couldn’t have made the ordinary extraordinary, so thank you everyone for really embracing the initiative, we are so grateful to have had everyone coming together to support us and each other this year.

On a more serious note, if you remember one thing from this speech, make it this: kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give. Do not fear failure no matter how bad things become. Our experience at school is what we make of it, and it is over before we know it – don’t worry I won't do another countdown until the end of everyone’s School journey… even though, Year 12 you only have 41 days ‘til trials.

Be proud to be a Wenonian. Be kind to others around you. Be authentic, embrace who you are and what you believe in. There is only one you, so embrace it! And, as I said in my Celebration Day speech, “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

So, thank you all for the best year we could have asked for, and, to celebrate we will see each and every one of you in the Undercroft for a dance party at lunch!
